# Mathematics and sports betting

Mathematics is essential when making betting predictions and more precisely said it is of great importance if you really want to win while betting on sports events.

Mathematics and statistics in sports betting are connected in many dimensions, but one of them is the correct calculation of the probability of a thing to happen related to the proposed by the bookmakers odds.

This is what we would try to explain in the next few lines, as we are going to talk about topics such as the margin used by the bookmakers and how we can use the bookmakers odds in our betting predictions.

Let’s take a bet offered by the bookies with equal values – for example, 1.91 to 1.91. Given those odds we can easily understand that according to the bookies the odds a particular bet to happen are 50 to 50. What we must understand is that in fact the chances of this to happen for us are actually 47.64 to 47.64. This is because the margin that the bookmaker puts is tthrough which they actually achieve their profit.

This in turn tells us something else, which is that we must achieve a success rate of 52.36 if we don’t want to lose money.

**This is true for all kinds of bets.**

Why is this important? Mostly because, the margin of the bookmakers and the actual probabilities for the match to end in some way should guide us when choosing the type of sport and the type of bets we are going to bet with. It makes no sense to try betting on sports and leagues where the bookmakers offer higher margin and lower coefficients respectively.

If we have a proposed coefficient from 1.91 to 1.91, we must achieve 52.36% success rate to gain small profit. However, if the odds are 1.83 to 1.83, the percentage success rate, which we have to achieve in order not to lose money in the long run are 54.6, which is a significant difference.

This is why before deciding on which sport and certain types of bets we are going to use we need to do a detailed study of the markets and odds offered by the bookmakers. It is better to specialize in types of bets with a lower margin, which respectively give better opportunity for profits.
